Not Easy Being Green

As I mentioned in the last post, I saw Wicked for the first time yesterday. I have so much to say about what I saw and how I felt that I just don't think I can do it justice yet. I need to process everything and put it into a well-written post, and I cannot do that this evening. What I can do is post this little sketch. Its not much, and it has its faults, but at least it is something. I think Elphaba is a fascinating character, both in the show and in Gregory Maguire's novel. I have been trying to draw her for years, and have never once come anywhere close to something that I like. This is not quite there yet, but it is a start. You can also expect more Wicked inspired artwork in the future. Have a great week everybody:)

  3. Great little sketch, your Laka piece is just stunning too! She really fits in well with the environment. I've heard nothing but good things about Wicked, I wish it would come to seattle soon!

  4. I love your depiction of Elphaba. I just started reading the book and have not seen the musical yet! From what i've read so far, she seems way more innocent and cute in your picture than in the book.

  5. BRITTNEY,

    I LOVE WICKED. SOOOOO MUCH!

William and I went and saw it a couple weekends ago. It was my second time seeing it. I saw it a couple years ago in London with Idina Menzel as Elphaba. It was SO SO EPIC!

    AH!

I'm glad you got to see it!

Green is a metaphor for being 'coloured'. Maybe that's why you have a hard time with it. It is speaking about race in a White context by painting a White woman green. It is like blackface without the black.
