<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">We know that this isn't easy folks! We always receive some comments and concerns about the purchasing process, and I really do want to do everything I can to make the experience as easy as possible. Here are a few Etsy troubleshooting tips for making the whole experience go a little more smoothly:

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Sign up on Etsy in advance.<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> <span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">If you do not already have an Etsy account, I strongly recommend making one ahead of time. I believe Etsy allows you to store preferred payment information in their system, and that way it can be all ready to go when you are ready to check out!

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Check out quickly<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> - Etsy does not hold items for you in your cart. I have had many people complain of calendars being removed from their carts before they could check out. If you know that you would like to purchase a calendar, pick one and check out as quickly as possible to avoid losing out to another customer.

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; font-weight: 700; white-space: pre-wrap;">If possible, check out using a credit card. <span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">Etsy allows two payment methods, but if you are using Paypal, the checkout process can take longer. Customers who have bought girls in the past have reported better luck using Etsy's direct checkout with a credit card.

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">One at a time, please<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">. I can't set a limit on the number of calendars that an individual customer can purchase through Etsy, but if I could I would request that you purchase one at a time. This helps to make sure that the checkout process goes more smoothly, and also allows for more customers to get calendars!

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Try a few times<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">. I'm trying to spread out the release schedule over a few dates and times to allow more people all over the world to have access to the calendars when the arrive in the shop. If you can't get a girl in the first round, please try again at one of the later times.

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Refill Clarity!<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> <span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">A consistent issue that customers seem to be running into is confusion about the Wardrobe Refill Packs, so I wanted to take a second to clarify exactly what they are. The refill packs are intended to replace previous-years' pages f<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">or customers who already own a Calendar Girl<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">. Every new Calendar Girl comes with her own set of pages, so if you are looking to buy a full calendar there is <span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">no need to purchase a refill pack<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">. Conversely, buying refill packs will not reserve full calendars. Basically, if you don't already own a calendar from a previous year, I don't recommend buying a refill pack (unless you are just looking to have a pretty set of dresses in your life :)

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Repeating That Last Bit:<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> Calendar stands (the girl part of the calendar) <span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">are not and will not ever be sold separately from the pages.<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> Please do not attempt to purchase pages as a way to reserve a girl - it will not work. The full Calendar Girl includes the wardrobe for 2019, so if you are new to purchasing calendars, she is all you need!

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">No Returns, Please.<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> This is spelled out in my Etsy shop policies, but I wanted to repeat it here. I have had several people ask if they could return refills that they have ordered if they are able to purchase the full calendar, and the answer is no. If there is damage or some other physical problem with your order when you receive it, contact me and we can definitely work something out, but otherwise we cannot process returns.

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">So that's it! Again, I want to sincerely thank you all for your patience and continued support. I'm so grateful to be able to create the things that make me happy and just hope that they can make others happy as well!

We always receive some comments and concerns about the purchasing process, and I really do want to do everything I can to make the experience as easy as possible. Here are a few Etsy troubleshooting tips for making the whole experience go a little more smoothly:

Sign up on Etsy in advance. If you do not already have an Etsy account, I strongly recommend making one ahead of time. I believe Etsy allows you to store preferred payment information in their system, and that way it can be all ready to go when you are ready to check out!

I have had many people complain of calendars being removed from their carts before they could check out. If you know that you would like to purchase a calendar, pick one and check out as quickly as possible to avoid losing out to another customer.

I can't set a limit on the number of calendars that an individual customer can purchase through Etsy, but if I could I would request that you purchase one at a time. This helps to make sure that the checkout process goes more smoothly, and also allows for more customers to get calendars!

I have had several people ask if they could return refills that they have ordered if they are able to purchase the full calendar, and the answer is no. If there is damage or some other physical problem with your order when you receive it, contact me and we can definitely work something out, but otherwise we cannot process returns.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Much like last year, I find myself in the predicament of having some 2017 Calendars left over past the New Year - and by some I mean a lot!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I once again had hoped to get this post up earlier, but it seems that the holidays get more and more crazy every year! I'm headed off on a quick work trip to New York for a few days, but I wanted to make sure that I get this schedule (and a few batches of girls:) up before I go - so here it is!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2017 Calendar Girl Release Schedule

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sunday, December 11th at 10am PST

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sunday, December 11th at 9pm PST

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Monday, December 12th at 5pm PST

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Saturday, December 17th at 2pm PST

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sunday, December 18th at 10am PST

(all calendars will be listed in the shop right here)

Again, I'm hoping that there will be about 50 girls released in each batch, and all orders placed up to and including Sunday, December 18th will ship before Christmas. (Please note: this is the cut-off date for all orders before Christmas.)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Copying and pasting again from last year, I<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
have received comments and concerns about the purchasing process,
so I wanted to spell out a few Etsy troubleshooting tips for making the
whole experience go a little more smoothly:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Check out quickly -
Etsy does not hold items for you in your cart. I had many people
complaining that they had calendars in their cart that were removed
before they could check out. If you know that you would like to purchase
a calendar, pick one and check out as quickly as possible to avoid
losing out to another customer.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One at a time, please.
I can't set a limit on the number of calendars that an individual
customer can purchase through Etsy, but if I could I would request that
you purchase one at a time. This helps to make sure that the checkout
process goes more smoothly, and also allows for more customers to get
calendars!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Try a few times.
I'm trying to spread out the release schedule over a few dates and
times to allow more people all over the world to have access to the
calendars when the arrive in the shop. If you can't get a girl in the
first round, please try again at one of the later times.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">Refill Clarity! A
consistent issue that customers seem to be running into is confusion
about the Wardrobe Refill Packs, so I wanted to take a second to
clarify exactly what they are. The refill packs are intended to
replace <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">previous-years' pages for customers who already own a Calendar Girl. Every new Calendar Girl comes with her own set of pages, so if you are looking to buy a full calendar there is no need to purchase a refill pack.
Conversely, buying refill packs will not reserve full calendars.
Basically, if you don't already own a calendar from a previous year, I
don't recommend buying a refill pack (unless you are just looking to
have a pretty set of dresses in your life :)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Repeating That Last Bit: Calendar stands (the girl part of the calendar) are not and will not ever be sold separately from the pages. Please do not attempt to purchase pages as a way to reserve a girl - it will not work. The full Calendar Girl includes the wardrobe for 2017, so if you are new to purchasing calendars, she is all you need!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">No Returns, Please. This is spelled out in my Etsy shop policies, but I wanted to repeat it here. I have had several people ask if they could return refills that they have ordered if they are able to purchase the full calendar, and the answer is no. If there is damage or some other physical problem with your order when you receive it, contact me and we can definitely work something out, but otherwise we cannot process returns.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
Whew! Again, I want to sincerely thank you all for your patience
and continued support. I have been and continue to be completely overwhelmed by the response to this little project of ours. Thank you all for being such wonderful cheerleaders - I hope you all have a magical holiday season. Cheers!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Well hello there!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I love to try new things - to push past what I know (and know how to do) and to forage into unknown territory. Inevitably, in doing so, I often discover happy accidents... as well as a fair share of unforeseen problems.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> When I set the goal to make 500 Calendar Girls for 2016, I knew it would be a challenge. I drastically underestimated that challenge. The holidays are a busy time of year in general, but the 2015 holidays hit me like a ton of bricks being launched from trebuchets in every direction. I have tried to be a little off-the-radar for a bit because all signs were definitely pointing towards me needing to slow down and take a break for my own health and sanity. That helped tremendously, so now I think we can pick up the pace a little.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, long story short - I still have 2016 Calendar Girls! A LOT of 2016 Calendar girls. And they are finally ready to be shared with you lovely folks!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm going to be releasing them again in batches - about 25-30 calendars per batch over the course of a few days. The listings will be posted in my shop right here, and the release schedule will be as follows:
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In order to stay inspired as an artist, I find that it is best for me to constantly have multiple ideas and projects brewing. Every once in a while, though, I will have one project that I am just dying to work on. It brews and builds and <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">eventually becomes an all consuming mo<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">nster<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> that<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> absolutely has to get out or it will wreck me.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ever since I worked on the Maleficent piece for the Sleeping Beauty Blu-Ray<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> (which I realize I've never posted about….more on that later) I've been intrigued by creating fully sculptural paper pieces. They are so much more labor intensive and harder to plan than my usual relie<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">f fare, but part of what I find inspiring about creating any artwork is what I don't know...and sub<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">sequently learn in the process. And these pieces involve lots of learning. And failing. And learning some more. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I learned A LOT while working on this piece, and I considered starting over from scratch quite often. This post is several weeks late - I had initially intended on posting her the day that she would debut at the Wonderground Gallery in Downtown Disneyland, but unfortunately a stomach flu put a wrench in all of my grand-master plans. I'm on the mend, though, and thought that she would be worth posting anyway. Thank you to everyone who has already made the trip to see her in Disneyland, and for all of your kind words of support. Happy Holidays to all!

What a week.

First and foremost - I'm so sorry to anyone I missed at the Wonderground Gallery. A stomach flu hit me last Friday morning, so I spent 24 of the unhappiest hours of my life in a hotel room at the happiest-place-on-earth. Thankfully, I'm on the mend, but I'm so sad to have missed the event! I've got a second Wonderground post ready to go, so that those of you who weren't able to come to Anaheim can get a closer look at my second piece for the show - that should be up tomorrow…

But first! I had hoped to release this schedule earlier in the week, but sickness put a wrench in those plans. Sickness also halted production a bit, so I wanted to make sure that I would be able to hit this release schedule before putting it out there for all of you. So here goes!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Wednesday, December 16th at 10am PST

(all calendars will be listed in the shop right here)

I'm hoping that there will be about 50 girls released in each batch, and all orders placed up to and including Wednesday, December 16th will ship before Christmas. (Please note: this is the cut-off date for all orders before Christmas.)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Somewhat like last year, I<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> have received some comments and concerns about the purchasing process, so I wanted to spell out a few Etsy troubleshooting tips for making the whole experience go a little more smoothly:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Check out quickly - Etsy does not hold items for you in your cart. I had many people complaining that they had calendars in their cart that were removed before they could check out. If you know that you would like to purchase a calendar, pick one and check out as quickly as possible to avoid losing out to another customer.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One at a time, please. I can't set a limit on the number of calendars that an individual customer can purchase through Etsy, but if I could I would request that you purchase one at a time. This helps to make sure that the checkout process goes more smoothly, and also allows for more customers to get calendars!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Try a few times. I'm trying to spread out the release schedule over a few dates and times to allow more people all over the world to have access to the calendars when the arrive in the shop. If you can't get a girl in the first round, please try again at one of the later times.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">Refill Clarity! A new issue that customers seem to be running into this year is confusion about the Wardrobe Refill Packs, so I wanted to take a second to clarify exactly what they are. The refill packs are intended to replace <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">previous-years' pages for customers who already own a Calendar Girl. Every new Calendar Girl comes with her own set of pages, so if you are looking to buy a full calendar there is no need to purchase a refill pack. Conversely, buying refill packs will not reserve full calendars. Basically, if you don't already own a calendar from a previous year, I don't recommend buying a refill pack (unless you are just looking to have a pretty set of dresses in your life :)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
So that's it! Again, I want to sincerely thank you all for your patience and continued support. I'm so grateful to be able to create the things that make me happy and just hope that they can make others happy as well!.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Have a wonderful week, and cheers to a magical Holiday Season!Brittney Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00316981640661295618noreply@blogger.com142tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16168638.post-41062721512360169102015-12-03T20:19:00.000-05:002015-12-03T20:19:03.044-05:00Lovely at Wonderground Gallery: Part 1

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As I mentioned in the last post, this coming Saturday (December 5th) the Wonderground Gallery in Downtown Disneyland will be hosting all six of the Lovely girls for an artwork release and book signing! It will be the first time in a long time that Lisa, Lorelay, Helen, Vicky, Claire, and I will all be together, and we are all very excited!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I was asked to create some new artwork to be released at the event, and while I had quite a few initial ideas, top priority went to this young lady. Have I mentioned that I'm a fan? No? Huh. Well, I am. It may be to the point of unhealthy obsession, but I try to channel that energy in the most productive ways possible. Thus, very large paper-cut artworks are born.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This piece is titled What's a Fire?, and stands at about 36 x 16 inches, making it one of the larges pieces I have worked on in some time. I fear that I may sound like a broken record for those of you who have been around for a while, but Part of Your World was my introduction to pure magic, and remains the standard that I compare all movie moments to. I could go on and on about why it is just perfection, but the bottom line is that it makes me feel. And I love that.

The original piece will make its debut on Saturday at 11am, and I believe that prints and possibly a few other items featuring the artwork will be produced through the gallery as well. I'm sure that the six of us will be taking pictures the day of, so stay tuned on instagram and twitter (and who knows, maybe even Periscope?) for real-time updates.

And as you may be able to tell from the title of this post, this is just Part 1 of what I have in store for Wonderground. I'm really excited about Part 2 , and am hoping to share with you tomorrow:)

Have a lovely evening everyone!Brittney Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00316981640661295618noreply@blogger.com131tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16168638.post-27027953724090376342015-11-28T15:13:00.001-05:002015-11-28T15:13:41.739-05:002016 Calendar Girls

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Well hello there.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm briefly coming up for air after a few months that felt like one mad-dash to several simultaneous finish lines. CTN-X is officially over and did not disappoint (thank you to all who came out and said hello and gave me so many hugs!), and next weekend all of the Lovely girls are getting together at Wonderground Gallery in Downtown Disneyland for a special artwork release and book signing! I managed to just barely finish a couple of new pieces for that event - more to come on that shortly!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And then lastly but not least(ly), we have the girls.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have to be honest - I've been completely overwhelmed with the response to these calendars. I am so grateful to everyone who has given me such wonderful feedback, and so I'm really trying to make sure that everyone who wants one can get one. We upped the Calendar Girl edition number this year to 500 (which is why I need to make this post brief - gotta get back to work!) and most of them will be going online in batches through the month of December. I will post a solid release schedule sometime next week, but I wanted to let everyone know that the first batch will go up in the Etsy shop on Monday, November 30th at 10am PST.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To recap for anyone who is unfamiliar, the Calendar Girls were an experimental project that David and I started two years ago, and we got such great feedback that we decided to continue with them as a yearly project. The concept is simple: A monthly desk calendar that is basically a paper doll. The stand is made from maple plywood in the form of a girl, and every new month is a page with a different outfit. While all of the pages are the same for each calendar, each stand/girl is hand stained, painted, and completely unique. The class of 2015 will contain 500 girls, all hand numbered, signed, and ready to go!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The last days of summer might be one of my favorite times of the year. The weather is still wonderful and everyone is gearing up for the excitement of a new school year. There is a simultaneous calm and energy in the air. For me, personally, all of the busy-ness of San Diego Comic Con and D23 are over, and there are still a few short months until the crazy that is The Holidays sets in. I was born during these dog days, got married on one of these dog days, and generally just feel best right about now.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I'm getting ready to head back to the East Coast to celebrate my little sister's wedding (!) and for a short but much-needed vacation with my guy. It seems like I'm always teasing things on my plate, but goodness - fully loaded, multiple spinning plates is what is happening over here. Some examples include this , this, and maybe most notably this (daily sneak peeks happen on Instagram, folks!) so I promise I'm not leading you all on.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So while I don't have much new work to share, I wanted to pass along some of my late-summer joy. From now through Sunday enjoy 10% off of all items in my etsy shop including the new items from SDCC that have just been listed! Just use the code SUMMERSALE at checkout. Enjoy these last long days, friends! I will check back in soon!Brittney Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00316981640661295618noreply@blogger.com160tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16168638.post-14631595085210502262015-07-07T17:37:00.003-04:002015-07-07T17:37:47.723-04:00San Diego Comic Con 2015!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hello there!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This one will be short and sweet: we are in the throws of getting everything ready to head down to San Diego, but I wanted to give a little update on what we will have and where we will be this year!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This year I have a new location at booth #4405! We will have the usual prints and books, with a few new items and originals. I'm especially excited about the little cosmetic bags that just came in!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Anyhow, I should be posting frequently on twitter and instagram over the week(end), so follow along there if you like! And I hope to see some of you in person! Have a lovely week!Brittney Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00316981640661295618noreply@blogger.com165tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16168638.post-7971344020538375742015-06-01T21:00:00.000-04:002015-06-01T21:00:58.428-04:00Past, Present, and Future

Hello.

I woke up this morning and found myself nearly at the halfway mark of 2015, the past 6 months being a bit of a blur, and felt overwhelmingly guilty for my complete negligence of this space. One of my New Year's resolutions for 2014 was to keep up, and when 2015 hit, I kind of unwittingly ran for the non-blogging hills.

As I was thinking about this blog, though, I realized that 2015 is somewhat of a landmark for this space - 10 years. This little space has been operating for a decade! My goodness how time flies. 2015 also marks 5 years for me at Disney, and that seems completely unthinkable. It feels like just yesterday I was writing about being accepted as a trainee, and I still feel brand new every day when I walk into work!

The past 10 years have been formative and transformative for me, and if you troll through these archives, you can certainly see why I say that. I am so grateful to have had this space for so long, and for everyone who has shown support for it along the way. Thank you all.

Part of the reason why I haven't posted in a while is that there is presently a lot of new, fun work on my plate, but not much that I can share just yet. There is quite a bit coming, and lots of other things that I haven't been organized enough to post about. I'm working on remedying that, so hopefully I will be posting lots of new work SOON.

So today I would mainly like to pose a question to anyone out there who is still following this space - what would you prefer to see here in the future? The addition of new social media outlets to my wheelhouse (twitter, instagram, etc…) have been fantastic, but in some ways have made it more difficult to come up with blog-specific content. I have really gravitated toward instagram and all of its instant visual goodness, but I don't find it to be the best format for writing lengthy, informative posts. That is better suited here, right? Am I crazy? Does anyone actually want informative posts?

I would love to hear your thoughts! Please leave comments and let me know what you would like to see, and I will do my best to keep up!

In the meantime, though, you can definitely keep up with my daily shenanigans on twitter and Instagram - follow @britsketch for both!

Have a great week, everybody!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Boy, holidays sure can be... challenging.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I must apologize to everyone who has been patiently waiting for updates on the Calendar Girls. I had every intention of posting a full release schedule in the first week of December, but had to delay that due to a few unforeseen circumstances. I'm happy to announce that the girls are ready to go now, and will be released as follows:
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Calendar Girl Release Schedule!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Tuesday, December 16th at 9pm PST

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Wednesday, December 17th at 5pm PST

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Thursday, December 18th at 12PM PST

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Friday December 19th at 10AM PST

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">(All calendars will be listed in the shop right here)

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There will be about 20 girls released in each batch, and all orders placed up to and including Friday, December 19th will ship before Christmas. (Please note: this is the cut off date for all orders before Christmas.)

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I have received a lot of comments and concerns regarding the last batch that was released and I tried to read through all of them. Mostly, it seems that people were frustrated with the Etsy checkout process. I definitely hear you and am looking into alternative options for next year's round of calendars, but unfortunately there is not enough time to set up a different purchasing method for this year's girls. Here are a few Etsy troubleshooting tips:

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Check out quickly - Etsy apparently does not hold items for you in your cart. I had many people complaining that they had calendars in their cart that were removed before they could check out. If you know that you would like to purchase a calendar, pick one and check out as quickly as possible to avoid losing out to another customer.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">One at a time, please. I can't set a limit on the number of calendars that an individual customer can purchase through Etsy, but if I could I would request that you purchase one at a time. This helps to make sure that the checkout process goes more smoothly, and also allows for more customers to get calendars!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Try a few times. I'm trying to spread out the release schedule over a few dates and times to allow more people all over the world to have access to the calendars when the arrive in the shop. If you can't get a girl in the first round, please try again at one of the later times.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hopefully I will have exactly the right amount of calendars for everyone who wants one and it will be Happy Holidays for all!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Finally, I want to sincerely thank you all again for your patience and continued support. I appreciate all of your encouragement and kind words as I try to navigate these unfamiliar "selling limited edition things" waters. I'm learning and I will certainly do my best to get better, and your feedback is always welcome!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Have a wonderful week, and cheers to a magical Holiday Season!
Well, the insanity that is the week of CTN-X is officially over. It was an overwhelming week of fun, and I want to thank everyone who came out to say hello - you make it a blast every year!

First off, for those of you who may be new to this blog, the Calendar Girls were an experimental project that David and I started last year, and we got such great feedback that we decided to take it even further this year. The concept is simple: A monthly desk calendar that is basically a paper doll. The stand is made from maple plywood in the form of a girl, and every new month is a page with a different outfit. While all of the pages are the same for each calendar, each stand/girl is hand stained, painted, and completely unique.

Last year we decided to start with an edition of 100, and those went so quickly that this year we have opened the edition up to 200 girls. The class of 2015, if you will. They are all hand numbered, signed, and ready to go!

Also new this year is the refill pack, which we have cheekily titled The Wardrobe. These refill packs are for all of you fantastic folks who picked up calendars last year and would like to give your girls an update for this year.

The 2015 set of girls debuted at CTN-X over the weekend, and received a great response. There are still plenty left over, though, so I would love to start making them available to everyone via the magic of the internet! Over the course of the next few weeks (leading up to Christmas) I will be releasing batches of Calendar Girls (between 10 and 30 at a time) in my shop until I run out. I will be releasing the first batch this Friday, November 28th at 10am PST. So set your calendars and your clocks! I will also be listing the refill packs at the same time, so you should have plenty of time to prep your girls for the New Year! There will be future updates on the next rounds of listings, so make sure you are following here, on twitter, and on Instagram to stay up-to-date!

Last but not least, I want to give thanks to all of you who support my posts here, and for all of your awesomeness. I am able to do what I love to do because of the encouragement that I receive from all of you, and for that I could not be more grateful. In honor of the holidays and good things in general, we are going to run a holiday sale in the shop through Sunday. Everything in the shop will be 10% off - just use the coupon code GIVETHANKS at checkout.

Have a happy and safe holiday everyone!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There are a few special times every year when I feel like a complete and total crazy person - this week, known as "CTN-Expo Week" is one of those times. I wanted to make sure, though, with all of the prepping and craziness, that I took a moment to update this little space to let everyone know about all of the exciting things that make this week so crazy (in a good way!) So here goes!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Lovely Panel, Signing, and Show Opening at the Center Stage Gallery
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Thursday, November 20th
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Round table discussion at 5pm, book signing and reception to follow
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I'm so happy to say that the Lovely girls are getting together one more time to chat and open the first and only American version of the Gallerie Arludik show from this past June! All six of us will be in attendance on Thursday night, and we will partake in a roundtable discussion moderated by the one and only Mr. Mike Gabriel! I think this is the official opening of the CTN-Expo -lots of new original artwork and there will be shuttles running back and forth to the gallery from the convention hall all weekend. If you are in town, you should definitely stop by!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The CTN-Expo
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">T-36
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Friday-Sunday
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">It is that time again! I will be set up very near to my usual spot (close to the front doors) at the CTN-Expo at the Burbank Marriott. In addition to my usual haul of prints and books, I will be debuting the first batch of 2015 Calendar Girls and Calendar Girl Refill packs! I will probably be bringing a limited number of Calendar Girls with me to the show each day, so try to swing by my table early if you are interested!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">And for everyone who can't make it to LA but would still like a Calendar Girl - I have good news! We have a larger edition (of 200) this year, and will most likely be putting nearly half of them up in the shop before the holidays! I'm thinking that thew will be going up in batches, but I will flesh out that plan and post more on it soon. For now, just know that they are coming!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I hope to see many friendly faces (both new and old) at the expo this weekend! If you plan to attend, I will apologize in advance for being at all "off". So far this week, forgetting what day it is, not knowing my current location, and losing my thoughts in the middle of a sentence have been alarmingly common occurrences, and while I will try to remedy that before Friday, just be warned.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Hope to see you all soon! Have a lovely week! Brittney Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00316981640661295618noreply@blogger.com58tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16168638.post-55023258268593361372014-11-04T17:09:00.001-05:002014-11-04T17:09:23.949-05:00Magic

Hello? Anybody there?

I completely understand if the answer is no and I am speaking to vast amounts of nothing and nobody, because I majorly fell of the wagon of regular posting. Life (as seems to often be the case) happens, and it is not very considerate of my strict blogging schedule.

In the off-chance that there is someone still checking this little space, I do have a rather fun update today! I was recently invited by the Wonderground Gallery in Downtown Disneyland to create an exclusive piece of artwork based on Frozen, and the piece above (titled "Magic") is a peek at the final result. You can see the full, tall version below - clearly, I just can't get enough of these two.

I will be down at the gallery on Saturday, November 8th from 4-6pm for the release of the artwork (there will be a one-of-a-kind embellished print, special edition canvas prints, matted prints, and more available) and I will be signing artwork while I'm there!

As far as I know, this piece will ONLY be available through the Wonderground Gallery in Downtown Disneyland for the time being. If you are not able to make it to the event on Saturday and would like to buy artwork, you can place an order by e-mailing Merchandise Guest Services at merchandise.guest.services@disneyparks.com or call Merchandise Guest Services at 877-560-6477 (select option 2 for prints.) Leave a voicemail if they don't answer. Wonderground Gallery is located in the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA.

I am really looking forward to Saturday! Here's wishing you all a lovely week and I hope to see some of you this weekend at the happiest place on Earth!
Just a quick little note to kick-off the weekend! I am happy to report that I have just added all of the new items from San Diego to my Etsy shop. I don't know about all of you, but I found this week to be a particularly difficult one. Illness and tragic news has kept me a bit down to say the least. I'm planning to spend the weekend having fun and celebrating all that is great in life, and I would love for all of you to do the same. To celebrate the facts that 1. it is about to be the weekend and 2. Life is awesome, I thought I would run a little sale in the shop! For this weekend only, everything in my shop is 10% off - just use the coupon code HAPPYWEEKEND at checkout.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I know it has been too long, and I'm sorry for that. It seems like one day in March I was just having fun, happily writing a blog post, and the next thing I knew it was nearly July! I just don't know where the time goes.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The good news is that I wasn't neglecting this space for the sheer thrill of it. I've been busy with lots of projects, and I thought I would share one of them today. I was honored to be asked by Don Clark of Invisible Creature to contribute to this year's Heartwork project - a charity project to benefit Target House. This year's theme was "Hope", and all of the contributing artists were asked to create a piece that was their interpretation of that theme. Clearly, my interpretation of the theme involves mermaids. My interpretation of any theme involves mermaids.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This piece and many others are available for purchase right here. They are all limited to a run of 10 prints only, so if you are interested don't wait! It is your chance to get some great artwork for a great cause!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There is quite a bit on the horizon here. Part of the reason that I have been MIA is because so much has been happening, and I will be updating on everything in short order. Thank you all so much for checking in - have a wonderful week and a happy and safe 4th of July!Brittney Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00316981640661295618noreply@blogger.com36tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16168638.post-5025329066187890402014-03-18T12:22:00.000-04:002014-03-18T12:22:02.591-04:00Ink and Paint Girls

I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but my creative process usually goes something like this:

Step 1: Receive a gallery show deadline
Step 2: Brainstorm ideas
Step 3: Drag feet/hem and haw/ procrastinate on ideas
Step 4: Panic attack one week before deadline
Step 5: Work like crazy to meet deadline
Step 5.5: Come up with the idea that I am most excited about one day before the deadline.

Now, this schedule is a little bit different for every project, but something like it did go down while I was working on the Legendary Beauties show with Lorelay. We had a great time brainstorming ideas together, and I was so happy about how the show turned out. But inspiration struck just a few days before we were supposed to turn in all of our pieces, and there was just no time to execute.

For the Legendary Beauties show, Lorelay and I both wrote down a list of famous female personalities (be it real, mythological, or fictional women) who we wanted to portray. From the very start, I had included "Ink and Paint Girls" on my list of to-dos, but I could never quite land on the execution. And then one day it hit me: They should be animated. Kind of zoetrope style. In the round.

And then we had to turn in the pieces for the show. Oh well.

I couldn't
get this idea out of my head though, so thankfully another opportunity
to create the piece arose when we did our first ladies group show at the
studio. This was the first time I had ever tried building a piece in the round, and it certainly was a challenge. Whereas I usually only have to be mindful of a few different angles on a piece, the Ink and Paint Girls had to be designed for 360° viewing. The final piece doesn't actually spin, but I think the general idea is conveyed. Perhaps working on this piece will pave the way for future animated paper pieces with motors :)

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Some angles are better than others, and I certainly would alter my process on the next one, but for me the learning and trial and error is a huge part of the fun! <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I had a blast working on this little experiment, and in the end was really happy with the final result. Some projects are worth the wait!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">On an unrelated note: Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend to say hello at the Walt Disney Family Museum. I had a wonderful time and came home so very inspired. I hope to write a post about my take on the experience soon, but for now I hope you all have a wonderful week!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Well, this past week has certainly been one wild ride.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> In the last of my posts on the process of working on Frozen, I wanted to talk about sisters. The relationship between Anna and Elsa was what originally compelled me to join the Frozen team, and what was at once an interesting and novel concept quickly turned into a relationship that I was remarkably (almost eerily) familiar with.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I am an older sister. I am an older, artistic, control freak, and annoyingly perfect-in-every-way sister. I analyze and approach with a calm, level head when possible. My younger, happy-go-lucky sister, Anna (aka Lainey) is compulsive. She would happily strike up conversations with complete strangers at age 5, and has been known to wildly drive golf carts into parked vehicles (also around age 5). She's a hugger, laughs till she cries, and is made of nothing but warmth.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">And though we love each other, it has always been difficult for the two of us to see eye to eye. As I watched Frozen begin to take its final shape, I would repeatedly have the wind knocked out of me at the striking similarities between the princesses and the two of us. Sure, I could give notes and feedback, but my input on plot was absolutely minimal. The story naturally moved in that direction, and I just happened to be a part of the team.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">And then I was asked to illustrate A Sister More Like Me for Disney Publishing. I tell you, they sent me the manuscript and I was a weeping mess. My husband read through it in my office and I caught him being a weepy-mess as well. Why? Well, because it was like someone had been spying on my life for the last 20 years and then wrote it down in an adorable little poem. And then subsequently asked me to illustrate it.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The book is told from each sister's perspective as Elsa and Anna take turns talking about how each wishes her sister was more like her.

Because of our compressed schedule, A Sister More Like Me had to be illustrated while I was still designing on Frozen, and though this made it difficult to get everything done, it was all completely worth it. Frozen was the learning experience of a lifetime, and a total joy at that. This little book was the frosting on the ice-cream cake.

As we sat at the studio on Sunday watching the Academy Awards, I realized that this post would be timely for another reason. Looking at the 500+ people around me who were all cheering for the same film, it became clear how much of a family Walt Disney Animation Studios really is. How family oriented filmmaking in general is. None of us can do it alone, and that is the beauty of the art form. We all work together, and if we are supportive and loving, we can bring out the best in each other. We can create something that is greater than the sum of all of our parts.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for following through my ramblings on Frozen. I'm looking forward to sharing new things very soon. Brittney Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00316981640661295618noreply@blogger.com79tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16168638.post-24975023462536117642014-02-26T12:41:00.001-05:002014-02-26T15:51:26.348-05:00Frozen - Costume Design

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">When we think about animated films, and specifically costumes in animated films, we tend to identify characters by 1 or 2 signature costumes. Cinderella had her peasant dress and her magical ball gown. Briar Rose had the same, though her ball gown was constantly shifting from pink to blue (to pink!) Alice has her iconic blue dress, and Peter Pan would not be Peter Pan without his feathered cap and tights!
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Well, no such beast was Frozen. While we definitely identified "hero" costumes for our lead characters, the narrative required many, many more costume changes than what is typical for an animated film. Between the sheer number of costumes and the complexity of them (we're talking layers of petticoats, pantaloons, tights, gloves, hats, etc) Frozen is probably the most clothed animated film of all time.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> The costumes in this film kind of have a life of their own. Whenever possible, they tell a visual story that supports the narrative. The cut, color and detail work on every piece of clothing is designed the way it is for a reason. Anna begins with a bright yellow palette, and she stays in the warm greens throughout the entire time she is growing up. When you meet her as an adult for the first time, she is back in that yellow - the same tenacious girl you met as a five year old.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Elsa, on the other hand, changes rather drastically. You meet her in her pale blue nightgown, and her palette gradually gets deeper and darker as she grows up and closes herself off from the world. Her sleeves get longer and she puts on gloves so that her skin is no longer exposed at all. Even her hairstyles evolve to be more tight and binding.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">As adults, the girls are still costumed to reinforce their personality. Elsa's coronation gown is regal and restrictive, while Anna's coronation gown has inverted pleats for happy, hopeful twirling. Since the coronation is such a formal event, it seemed only fitting that Anna's hair be in an updo. To keep her playful, though, we added ribbons to her hair so that she could have a lot of great secondary motion. That same idea of added secondary motion on Anna is present in her traveling cape, where we added pompoms to the seams of the heavy wool fabric that (along with her rosemaling) reinforce her playfulness.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The bulk of my contribution to Frozen was definitely in the costume department. I ran the gamut from working on the sisters, clothing the King and Queen, and dressing the royal guard to refining Oaken's fabulous sweater/suspender combo and figuring out what troll clothing looks like <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> I tell you, I will never look at a lining the same way again!
It was actually a little bittersweet to work on the costuming for this film because I frequently realized that while a lot of these clothes would be made into real-life costumes for children, there was slim to no chance that they would ever be manufactured for adults. Like myself. Anna's boots?! Come on.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">When it comes to technology, I am the Queen Bee of procrastination. I'm running on operating systems that were released before the dawn of time because I don't want to go through the "hassle" of updating. When did instagram add videos to their platform? A year ago? Well, I wouldn't know because my phone operating system was so out of date that EVEN THEN I couldn't use the new features on the app. And I don't even remember the last time I could use twitter from my phone. Sheeesh.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So when I got the new Iphone 5s in December, I thought "This is perfect. I will get my technology organized and up to date for the New Year! Resolution #1 is in the bag!" I plugged my new phone in and started to restore all of the apps I already own... and received an error message telling me that my version of Itunes was out of date and that I needed to update it before I could restore my phone further. Oh...okay. Well, I guess I will just do this later then.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">That was over two months ago. I have had a brand new phone in my possession for over two months and have stubbornly refused to set it up because I didn't want to update Itunes. I am happy to report, however, that I was able to get my act together this weekend and get my brand-spanking (2 month-old) new phone up and running. And yes, by order of my husband, automatic updates are turned on. Permanently.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">In similar Brittney procrastinating fashion, I have had oodles of shiny new Iphone cases sitting boxes in my office for months now. I had originally planned on releasing them on Etsy before the new year, but then other projects got the better of me, and the poor little phone cases fell by the wayside. In honor of my current wave of technology inspiration, though, I'm releasing eleven new iphone cases to my etsy shop today! Most of the new designs are for the Iphone 5s (not 5c, sorry!), but there are a few still available for the 4/4s.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">They feature various old and new designs, and come in a pretty packaging for gift-giving. You can have a peak at them all right here.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> Whew - I don't know about you, but I love accomplishing things on a Monday. It sort of sets the tone for the week, don't you think? Thank you all for stopping by, and have a wonderfully productive week! I will have more posts (including a few more on Frozen) up soon, so stay tuned!

I'm an Ariel girl. That really isn't news to anyone who has frequented this blog, but if you are a new visitor - there you go! The Little Mermaid landed on my lap when I was very small and deeply and profoundly changed me. Everything about her was everything that I wanted to grow up to be, and it thoroughly annoyed me for most of my life that I did not have luscious red locks with anti-gravity bangs. Or fins.

Final Elsa design

And then Elsa. When I initially started working on Frozen, Elsa was a very different character. She was moody, more jealous, and the only part of her that I could really relate to was the fact that she was an older sister. The more the story team finessed her and her motivations, though, the more I realized that I am more like Elsa than I ever was like Ariel. When you have fancied yourself as a bubbly mermaid for most of your life, the realization that you are actually more of a snow queen kind of hits you like a ton of ice-bricks.

The images above illustrate the transformation in Elsa's silhouette and palette.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Thus the experience of working with her throughout the making of this film was an extremely personal one. Elsa walks a fine line between being a distant and a sympathetic character, and I wanted to contribute in any way that I possibly could to make sure that audiences would love her and understand her the way that I already did. In a weird way working with her was an exercise in self-preservation.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">One of the first assignments I received on Elsa was a redesign of her hair. She had initially been designed with a sharper silhouette, but as her character changed it became apparent that her style needed to be refreshed. We wanted something for her that was more approachable, more romantic, but that still retained some Norwegian ethnicity. Oh, and magical - it would be great if it was magical, too.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">After many passes and many meetings spent discussing what hairstyles say about personalities, the above braid emerged as the winner. There is a flame-like quality to it that I loved when put into juxtaposition with her ice-powers. It is fragile but sharp (like she is), and also no-nonsense. Elsa doesn't have time to fuss with her hair - she just freezes it in place and gets on with the show.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">And then there is that dress. What I wouldn't give for someone to ice-magic me that dress. Just like Elsa herself, her dress went through many, many iterations until it finally felt right for our girl. When this dress materializes, Elsa is at her most confident. She is open and free after years of controlling and containing all of her emotions. Since costumes should be designed to support the character, this dress needed to be a glorious breathe of relief.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Once we had snow queen Elsa figured out, we had to work backwards to establish who she is when we first meet her. Before her coronation, Elsa holds everything in. She is controlled and contained. Her initial braided bun reflects that, as well as her coronation dress and cape. She is quite literally the pillar of strength that the people of her kingdom need her to be, and yet she is completely closed off from them.

Two years passed from the first time I worked on Elsa until the actual release of the film, and she went through a tremendous amount of changes during that time. I am so happy about where she landed and so honored to have been given the chance to work with her. Ariel still holds a special place in my heart, but if I am honest with myself... I am an Elsa girl.
Once the team had decided that Frozen would take place in a kingdom that was based on Norway, a group was sent to Norway to gather as much first-hand reference as possible. While there were many things learned on this trip, the one thing that the team came back with that directly affected my work on the show was the art of rosemaling.

Rosemaling is a type of decorative folk-painting that can be seen just about everywhere in Norway - it is used on everything from architecture to clothing. My fantastic art director, Mike Giaimo, (if you don't know who he is, do yourself a favor and look him up!) decided that we needed to develop our own library of rosemaling for Frozen - and that is where I came in!

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">My first month or so on Frozen was dedicated solely to creating rosemaling for the world of Arendelle. I worked on everything from wallpaper to tapestries (like the ones above) to painted architectural designs to costumes (there will definitely be more on those later). The great thing that we discovered about our rosemaling was that nothing went to waste. We needed so much of it to propagate throughout the film that even if a design didn't get picked in the first round, we ended up using it later.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">For costuming, we wanted our rosemaling to reinforce each individual character's personality traits. Anna is bright and bubbly, so her rosemaling is always effervescent and floral. Elsa is poised and refined, so she has long, elegant designs with a hint of crystal-like geometry. Since Kristoff is a bit of an outsider, his patterns are much more geometric and banded, reflecting design elements seen in the clothing of the Saami people of Norway.

The tapestries that hang throughout the castle in Arendelle were a fun challenge. They had to be approached with the design language we established with Arendelle's rosemaling, but with an added element of storytelling. The tapestries below were initially requested as a set of two: one representing Spring and the other representing Winter. Eventually it was decided that we should have all four seasons, so Summer and Fall were added to the mix.
I don't think I had any idea when I started on Frozen how prevalent rosemaling would be. Honestly, I was thrilled to just be able to work on the movie, so I happily doodled away for days and days on these designs. Now I look back and am so thrilled to have been given this task. As a visual development artist, it is really rare that your actual work makes it to the final frame of the film. Our jobs are to inspire and inform the artists who make the actual assets, but in this case I get to see my work on the walls and the hems of their skirts. It is magic.
